Biography

Robert Chen completed undergraduate biochemistry and medicine at McMaster University. His postgraduate training is that of a generalist resuscitator: a rotating internship was followed by anaesthesia residency at the University of Toronto. Robert also gained experience as an emergency room physician during that time. He trained as a trauma anaesthesia fellow in 1998-1999 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto and the Ryder Trauma Center in Miami. In 2004, Robert took time away from anaesthesia practice to learn transesophageal echocardiography. As member of the Department of Anaesthesia at St. Michael’s Hospital, his practice included trauma team leading, general and cardiovascular anaesthesia, perioperative echocardiography / ultrasound and critical care. Robert Chen was recruited to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in January 2015. His work interests include teaching, curriculum building and developing inter-specialty links for point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and focused cardiac ultrasound (FOCUS).
